Huntington County was organized effective December 2, 1834, and was named in honor of Samuel Huntington, a delegate to the Continental Congress from Connecticut and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Captain Elias Murray, then a member of the state legislature, proposed the name. The population of the county in 1840 was 1,579 and had grown to 38,075 by 2000.
