Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Grant Program

At Region 3A, we are committed to helping communities enhance roadway safety and work toward the ultimate goal of eliminating roadway fatalities. The Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant program, funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), provides municipalities with crucial financial support to develop and implement strategies that make roads safer for everyone.

What Is the SS4A Grant Program?

The SS4A grant program provides two major types of funding to support comprehensive safety improvements:

  • Safety Action Plan Funding – This funding assists local communities in developing a robust safety action plan. It’s relatively easy to apply for, especially for small and mid-sized municipalities. Once created, the safety plan can be seamlessly integrated into roadway asset management strategies and long-term transportation planning.
  • Implementation Funding – This funding supports the execution of strategies outlined in a safety action plan. Implementation grants are highly competitive, requiring detailed proposals and a strong vision for road safety enhancements.

Cost Share Advantage: The SS4A grant covers 80% of project costs, meaning municipalities only need to provide a 20% match—a significant advantage for communities looking to maximize their budget while prioritizing roadway safety.
