Accident Studies

Region 3A works in two counties per year, performing an accident study in each county. These studies have resulted in changes and funding for projects ranging from safety modification and signage, to larger projects in order to improve the safety of roadways in targeted areas.

Accident studies involve monitoring traffic crash patterns throughout an area to help provide insight into ways in which the safety of the road system can be improved. These studies regularly involve information gathering, analyzing crash reports, mapping data to help uncover trends, and reporting the findings.

Examples

The Town of Avilla brought to the attention of Region Transportation Staff a fatal accident at the intersection of Old 3 and State Road 3.  This is an angled intersection approximately 1.5 miles from the center of Avilla.

Baseline and CR 800-900E

Baseline Road is east to the west road and crosses Noble County.  The area in question was discussed with the County Engineer and County Sheriff for possible accident remediation.  Both officials agreed this should be an area of study.  The section involved is hilly, with minimal shoulders.  Accident reports indicated there were a high for the are a number of accidents 13 with 3 injuries and 1 fatal.  There was a Rural Safety Audit Review conducted by Purdue’s Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP).  Funding was granted for remediation to correct sight distance issues.
